KENYANS,WHATS YOUR TAKE ON THIS??
The renaming of Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani to Safaricom Stadium — Home of Heroes by the Sports StadiUM Management Board highlights something that we Kenyans are unwilling to accept.
That as far as our leaders are concerned, they can unilaterally set a price on Kenya and what is dear to Kenyans. That in Kenya, there is a price for anything and everything to be given away for cash!
This event comes close on the heels of the furore caused by Samsung company which has been allowed to place a banner advert on the top floor of the iconic Kenyatta International Conference Centre.
Arguments that the Sports Stadia Management Board and the KICC management need to raise money for their daily operations ring hollow considering that these facilities are not mere buildings but have become symbols synonymous with Kenya.
The management of our public facilities must find better and more innovative ways of raising money to finance their operations. Giving away for cash the names and icons that touch the very heart and psyche of the Kenyan people and national identity is not the way out.
Unless this trend is checked, Kenyans should not be surprised if one day some rich individual or corporation pays for the right to change the name, for example, of the Maasai Mara, our capital city Nairobi or even the name of our country Kenya!
Quote of the day: “That's not a lie, it's a terminological inexactitude. Also, a tactical misrepresentation.” — Alexander Haig, the military general who served as the US Secretary of State under President Ronald Reagan and was the White House Chief of Staff under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford was born on December 2, 1924.
